The History of Tiki Hut

Hilton Head’s Original Toes-in-the-Sand Beach Bar

If you’re looking for the ultimate Hilton Head beach bar, welcome to Tiki Hut.

Located right on Coligny Beach at Beach House Hilton Head Island, Tiki Hut has been serving frozen drinks, cold beer, and live music on Hilton Head since 1977. It’s the kind of place where you can walk straight off the sand, order a cocktail, and stay way longer than you planned.

Over the years, it’s turned tourists into locals, and locals into legends.

Sand in your toes. Music in the air. Ocean in front of you. That’s The Tiki Hut.

Back When Hilton Head Was Just a Beach Town

In the 70s and 80s, Hilton Head Island wasn’t packed with resorts and restaurants. It was quieter. Sleepier. All about the beach.

When The Tiki Hut opened in 1977, it quickly became the place people gathered after a long day in the sun. Visitors remember grabbing frozen drinks, playing volleyball at sunset, and dancing barefoot under the thatched roof.

Before Hilton Head became the vacation destination it is today, Tiki Hut helped define the island’s laid-back beach vibe — and it still does.

A Classic, Upgraded

In 2024, The Tiki Hut got a refresh as part of the Beach House Hilton Head Island renovation. The bar is bigger. There’s more seating. A better stage for live music.

But don’t worry — the iconic palm-thatched roof is still here, built in traditional Seminole “chickee” style. The vibe? Unchanged: Laid-back. Lively. Legendary.

Live Music. Every. Single. Day.

Looking for live music in Hilton Head? We’ve got it 365 days a year.

From local island bands to regional favorites, the Tiki Hut stage is always rocking. In fact, we were voted #3 Best Beach Bar in the 2025 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

Not bad for a beachfront bar that started behind a Holiday Inn in the ‘70s, huh?

Where Music History Happened

Before they were huge, Hootie & the Blowfish played right here at Tiki Hut. Darius Rucker has talked about those early days – playing beachfront gigs for “beer and sunshine” while building their following.

Edwin McCain was a regular too, playing long, late-night sets that became part of Hilton Head music legend.

A lot of music history started under this thatched roof.
